First Line of Acknowledgements: I’ll admit it. What initially attracted me to the idea of writing a book were two words: “Easy Money.”First Line Of Chapter 1: Before you scoff and say to yourself, “What advice can Jim Belushi, beloved international superstar of stage and screen, give to me, Joe Everyman?” the answer is simple: hope.Last Line Of The Book: And now, by taking what you’ve learned in these pages, you’re ready to be a husband and a father, right? Hell, no. You’re not even close. That’s going to be an entirely different book. And it’s going to cost you twice as much.

With the Super Bowl fast approaching, I wanted to share this video of “The Drive” from Super Bowl XXIII in 1989. For an 8-year old living in the Bay Area at the time (as I was), This was a HUGE deal. Oh, and did I mention that the video is in Japanese? It’s pretty hilarious to hear the announcer scream, “Montana magic!” when they score the winning touchdown.

Fun tidbit for Bay Area sports fans: Look for Mark Ibanez (the KTVU sports anchor) at the bottom of your screen at the 5:40 mark.

Pavement Tuesday #5

For the next few Tuesdays, I’m gonna focus on songs that I thought should have been included on the forthcoming Pavement “Best-of” (The track list was announced last week. The disc is released on March 9th), but weren’t.

“Father to a Sister of a Thought” off Wowee Zowee wasn’t Pavement’s first stab at country rock, but it’s arguably their best. As with most classic Pavement songs, the lyrics are impenetrable but immensely pleasing. (Your guess as to what “Angel of Corpus Christi, you’re so misty, tell me what I wanna hear” means is as good as mine.) And as a guitar player, I’m pretty enamored with the chord progression in the verses (G-Dm-C-A), and I’ll usually strum it out anytime I pick up an acoustic. Also, it’s my second favorite Pavement video. (The first? Duh.) Rollerblading cowboys eating fast food is a winning combination in any video.

Only 33 more Tuesdays until Pavement plays Central Park!

I want to start a band that only covers this song. Any takers?

Pavement Tuesday #4

“Box Elder” is arguably the song that launched Pavement’s career. It first appeared on the obscure 7-inch, Slay Tracks (1933-1969). Somehow that release found its way into the hands of The Wedding Present, an English band, who decided to record a cover of “Box Elder.” The Wedding Present’s version started getting airplay on John Peel’s influential BBC show, and pretty soon people were asking about the song’s creators. The rest, as they say, is the rest.

The “Box Elder” posted here is not the original from Slay Tracks. I kinda prefer the live version from the Wowee Zowee deluxe reissue. It was recorded in 1994 at Australia’s Triple J radio station. You have to sit through two and a half minutes of the band playing a ZZ Top-meets-Japanese noise rock jam before they start the song, which is pretty funny.

Random fun fact: In their live show, Los Campesinos! play “Box Elder” before segueing into their song “You! Me! Dancing!” Check it out.

Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen.

For me, it was over when the Springfield wanted to do the Johnny Carson show. What the fuck were we doing the Johnny Carson show for? That was just another of Stephen Stills’s things, and he was right - if the Springfield was gonna make it, people had to see them - but I didn’t want to be seen doin’ that. I didn’t want to do it that way.
— Neil Young, in Shakey by Jimmy McDonough (page 210), citing the reason that he left Buffalo Springfield was because the band wanted to appear on The Tonight Show. Neil wanted no part of that. Now he’s gonna stick it to the man as the final musical guest on The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien. Way to bring it full circle, Neil!
